The era of No Child Left Behind brought a new teaching technique into American schools. Our teachers stopped teaching material for the sake of teaching, but rather started teaching to ensure that students could pass a single and specific standardized test. Pressured by deadlines to meet high performance standards, some teachers even stooped to the level of cheating for their students. Teaching to the test has set our students and schools up for failure.
The mounting tension caused by strict standards has led to up to 18% of regular classroom material to be omitted. Our schools should focus on making sure all students are proficient with material and able to graduate, but that’s not what’s happening. The pressure of standardized testing has caused some students to turn to cheating instead of working hard to graduate. Our schools need to be reformed and taken back to where an education is the goal and simply not meeting minimum standards set by standardized testing.
